:- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Mary B -- The "old" edinburgh : This slim volume is a wonderful firsthand account of Edinburgh of the 1800s. It evokes the era and the city well, and was a fun read before traveling there. In fact, it enhanced my experience of the city, which today is so full of touristy trade and modern life. Robert Louis Stevenson is a good story teller and clearly loved his city. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2012 )

Thanks to the excellent writing of the great author R.L. Stevenson one can make their own picture about the city which has kept its uniqueness and charm until these days. Edinburgh is a real pearl among British towns and cities. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2016 )

- 5.0 out of 5 stars from ReadingScotland -- This is the travel guide I would pick to read in Edinburgh! : Edinburgh: Picturesque Notes by Robert Louis Stevenson is a short, beautifully written description of Edinburgh by a classic author with a deep connection to this, his place of birth. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from jeepster -- Auld Reekie. : An amazing picture of Edinburgh past. In fact., this is the only guide book I shall use for the city in future. (Even although I know it so well!). Stevenson's atmospheric words are sometimes unkind and rather scathing, but if I was writing a guide today for the city, my own words would be much the same. How much the city fathers have thrown away carelessly. How much history lost? Still, there is much to see, and a fund of stories to enjoy. Stevenson has captured a mood which even today, rings true. Edinburgh, once it gets under your skin? There is no cure. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 27, 2013 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Alex -- that 19th century life seems not distant at all but much like our own in the 21st century : The prose is so vital, so immediate, so perceptive, so economically descriptive, that 19th century life seems not distant at all but much like our own in the 21st century. As someone who was born and brought up in Edinburgh, then left in early middle age to live in another country, this book has special meaning for me and it has been a joy to discover it. I want to give it to everyone I know who has a connection to the city for Christmas. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 16, 2014 )
